changes

So the scanner died. Luckily the machine not the human.
And so ended the era of undiscriminating and random mass scanning.

For a while it all did look rather dark....
But scanning strives on, though in smaller scale.

A new smaller scanner, less books and smaller dpi.
Basically 450dpi instead of 600dpi.

But on the other hand... less scratches and better cropping and there where about 5 people in world who actually cared about 600dpi size anyway.

Scanning will continue!

  4. Meh, those scans were too big for me, anyway :P

Well, how lucky that you had a plan B. Keep up the good work!

(Still crossing my fingers for FMA some day, hehe...)

  5. Gave me quite a scare there; thought you were going to close up shop and peace out.

  6. All these five people must be from Germany, because every editor I scan for insisted on 600 dpi.

  7. Digital ripping would be a great idea, indeed.

  8. +1 for digital rips!

  9. The thing with digital rips is that many people are doing it already. You'd have to watch out so you don't end up repeating rips of series that others have done from the exact same version.
Also, it's not easy to find a catalogue of what's already out there.

    1. They're really difficult to find. Where are people finding these now?

    2. I use BookGN and MyComicPost (filtering by "manga" category on both sites) to find out when there are new scans available.
Once I know what to look for, I download from DC++ (from the hub called Perfection).

Also, sometimes, but not always, direct download links can be found on Madokami and the 4chan Win-o-thread archives, but again, you have to know what series to look for.

      There's also torrents, sometimes.

The hard part, in all cases, is to separate the manga from the ENDLESS STREAM OF COMIC BOOKS OH GOD that drown the few manga releases in between.

If you want to find a list of available manga rips, the best bet is BookGN. It's not perfect, but that's what we got.

    3. Thank you, Phoenix! But what torrents do you use for this now? PirateBay is dead, only a few poor qualuty mirrors exist.

    4. Um... Well, there's Kickass (www dot kat dot cr), a user called Nemesis43 usually uploads them. But that user uploads a lot more than just manga.

So it's hard to find them like that, and since I started using DC++, I stopped using those torrents.

You could try searching "(series name) digital" or "(series name) empire" on kat, to make it easier, I suppose...
If you don't know which series and just want to browse, then just search on BookGN, like I said before.

  12. 600pdi is nice for when guys like redline, etc crop & resize them, but that's about it. Good to see you're still chugging along.

Digital manga would be nice, but scanning free library manga sounds a lot better, financially. Plus I don't think a lot of older works are being relicensed & distributed in digital format.

And as much as I enjoy reading new works, having quality scans of older works is so much better. Especially with the cost some scumbag resellers think they're gonna get for a bunch of old yellowed tattered up softbacks.

  13. Yeah, let other people handle digital rips. You're great at what you do already and many of these titles will never make it to digital or get a reprint so your preservation efforts are much needed. Glad you're still chugging along :).

  14. You know what, I was thinking about it, and I realized that it'd be really sweet if you were to provide mirrors to digital manga releases from comicbook scene release groups. Releases be groups like that seem to be greatly overlooked by the manga community. And I do mean greatly. Just a thought.
