Random Scans & Hinokai: Outlanders v1 v2 v3 v4 v5 v6 v7 (v8)

Outlanders   v1 v2 v3 v4 v5 v6 v7  HQ releases by Hinokai

Download from Mega folder "main2" at Releases page.

-Manga series which can rightfully be considered legendary. First time ever released in HQ!
Story which has everything.  Cute alien girls, spaceships, supernatural, military action, epic fights, romance, and huge amount of destruction.

-v5 is what I consider to be the best volume of the series.
-v6 begins by the wedding which makes it a must read. It also has nice extra story at the end.
-v7 is a filler volume. Hinokai miracle continues! The cleaned and redrawn art is incredible sight. Well, it's still a filler in story part of course. But you will do yourself a great disservice if you don't download and take a look at the art of this release.
-v8 was a lot better then I remembered! While it inherits a bit of filler from v7, in most of the book story moves. And the end works, then comes epilogue and extra story is good too.

So final my conclusion of the series is that there's one book too many, v7, There's no question that v7 should have been squeezed to be part of v6 and v8. Yet if you're prepared to leaf through v7 when reading this stellar series, I can promise you story&art experience you wont forget.

unedited scans (complete) Download from Mega folder "O".
(600dpi): v1 v2 v3 v4 v5   (400dpi): v6 v7 v8

-these are all the covers I could find from the raws and old DH issues. Obviously not our scans but sadly impossible to credit.

 do you still remember outlanders?

    1. Uh, what?
In the case you wonder why there's no plans to scan more volumes, the answer is simple.
      Because it's hard!
This single Outlanders volume took as long to scan/edit as 4 normal books. And was even more straining.

If some pro editor were to make request then maybe our B-team (me) could scan it. (That would mean lower res and quality) But it would have to be serious pro...

By the way, while Outlanders books haven't been scanned before, Outlanders magazine has. (In low res though, about 1000px height.)

  2. when u say pro one? what do u mean buy that someone who res the img and do some clean or there is something I don't know?

    1. (I'm not sure what you asked so I shall try to guess it.)
      -What's pro?
Someone who has experience with editing scans, and is good at it.
      -What does pro do?
Crop image so that only page itself is shown while sparing as much artwork as possible. Clean the image if there's dirt. Connect double pages. Redraw if needed. Try to fix spine someway. Resize. Make sure textures do not corrupt from resize. Give strong leveling while sparing gray tones.

In short pro does about anything.

By "res" I mean image resolution. The amount of detail in an image. 1000px height might be just and just enough to online reader. While 3000px would show even the smallest details.

    1. Well, I see you are serious with this.

BUT, I strongly recommend you to start with redrawing instead as that would likely be the hardest part of editing. As there weren't any stains or damage on pages (or at least I don't remember any), That would mean editing double pages like p064-p065 into a single image.

But let's talk about your editing.

In the case of Outlanders I would say bigger is better, and would go all the way to 3000px height. While that may seem large, remember that these ARE big books. Almost A4. (For A4 natural pixel height is 3508px. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_resolution )

I would say the minimum image size to which these pages can be easily resized is 2500px. Any lower then that and you risk texture corruption which would require to be fixed with filters.
In any case, if you plan to release these images in a size under 3000px, you should also make a HQ version. Meaning that you just save images before resize as a separate release.

    2. About your leveling.
http://i.imgur.com/5GrCj.jpg was clearly not leveled strongly enough. Notice that amount of leveling needed may vary from page to page. And varies between chapters.
Be careful when leveling white as some dots are faint. Though I ain't sure, I doubt there need to go under value 250.

    3. mmmm here I am lot totally lost lol, I resize the imge to 1400 with 12Q that is what I know about HQ lol, if u want me to do something else tell me

and about the cleaning it's phases 1 and in phases 2 I do it manual

mmm I will try to do it again I did all the vol 1 in 1400px with 8q it look good to me

      Delete
    4. 12Q tells about amount of compression in a image. Actual quality is more connected to it's resolution.
1mb image with height 3000px and strong compression has far more quality then 1mb image 1500px with low compression.

Also if you are using Photoshop for image editing then do not use it's own jpg saving. Because it's crap. Instead pirate a plugin ProJPEG5.

    5. Kickthekitty try using Save for Web with the settings: PNG-8, Adaptive, No Dither, No Matte, No Transparency, Colors: 16/24 (try 17)
File size will be bigger (from 700kb jpeg -> 1.1mb for a 4000px height image at 72dpi) but quality loss is next to nothing.
and quick note: when resizing below 3000px, resize to 3000px and then below (1300px usually produces a nice pattern background with little boxes)

so I have to cropped it and clean it and save it as 3000px

then resized 2 times like 2000px and 1800 px and saved it.

  5. I've kept an eye on this for a little bit, and since DaRcK hasn't responded since June, I figured I'd finally give in and see whether my cleaning is up to scratch.

I did a few pages at the start of the volume then the double page that you mentioned above. First couple pages might be a little iffy as I was still getting an idea of the flexibility of the levels.

Anyway, if they're passable, I'll keep going through the volume. If they're not but they're close, then feel free to point out things I should correct.

Oh, and while I think of it, thank you for scanning these books, especially if they were a particularly troublesome process.

Man, this was a beast to upload on my crappy internet, had to split it cause line dropouts kept interrupting me.

They're all hovering around 6000px high, though a couple are lower due to a couple occasions of slightly overzealous cropping. If that's an issue, I can easily redo a few pages.

And uh, pages 13, 14 and 17 are inverted since I forgot to put it back after using invert to check for dust on whites, but nothing a quick Ctrl+I won't fix.

And man, I don't know if I was using that ProJpeg thing wrong, but it seemed like it was giving me larger file sizes for the same quality. Maybe it's my eyes.

Anyway, have a flick through and tell me if there's anything wrong, I'll fix it up. If there's not, I'll continue onto volume 2 sometime soon.

    4. (cropping ain't issue.)

There's no way ProJpeg should give larger file sizes.

I picked an image at random tested saving it. I use ProJPEG5.
      -Image from your archive:
      http://aparekitt.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/outlanders-v1-p016.jpg
      -saved in 95quality, 5 smoothness:

      http://aparekitt.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/outlanders-v1-p016-60-10.jpg

Even saving with lossless PNG you get smaller image:
      http://aparekitt.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/outlanders-v1-p016.png

I have no idea what could be causing this. Are you sure you are saving them with proJPEG?
In any case since images are for some reason coming out LARGER then lossless PNG, just save everything in PNG instead.
Size won't be problem anyway since the plan was to have separate HQ and LQ versions. And I can do that LQ version myself since it's your HQ resized/saved.

  6. 2 days to crop, rotate, level, etc.
3 days to dust and join doubles.
One month to repeatedly put off actually working on the thing.
    Yay procrastination.

    http://bayfiles.com/file/tBrJ/Y9qVS1/Outlanders_Volume_2.rar

As I had expected, my problems with ProJpeg came from not knowing how to work the thing. Thanks to your post and some testing I got the hang of it and file sizes are little more sane (still a bit crazy, but, well 6000 height!).
If they're still over-sized then I'm open to more precise instructions on what settings I should be using.

Anyway, same as before, everything should be nice and clean but if there's any issues just point em out.

Sorry for the delay, and thanks again for putting in the effort to scan these. If you ever feel up to scanning future volumes, I'll happily clean those too.

    1. Sorry for not posting your v1 release before. I didn't realize it was final version.

I shall repack v1 to single archive and upload that and v2 to Depositfiles. (Since DF allows over 1GB files)
But one thing I would like to do first is to add credit pages to your releases. Just a page telling where the scans came from and who edited them.
So do you have preference of styles of credits? Or would prefer to do the page yourself? and how do you wish to be mentioned? And by what name?
If no special wishes, then I will simply write "scans by Kickthkitty" "edited by Hinokai" around few images.

    2. Also I plan to indeed scan at least v3. (Hopefully more but I don't wanna to make promises as my position is a bit unstable at the moment.)
But I have to warn you that quality of scans wont be anywhere near of that in v1 and v2. :(

      Delete
    3. Well, I can always up a smaller version of v1 now that I have a better idea of how to use ProJpeg, now that you mention it. 550mb is a lot less painful than the current one.

As for credits, I'm not fussed, Hinokai is fine and however you want to insert them is ok with me.

And I'm fine working with any quality, I'm just happy to be able to work on Outlanders.

      http://aparekitt.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/outlanders-v1-sign.jpg

I also added magazine covers 1-8 to archives as those are rather unknown.
But I forgot to add covers from raws... And don't feel like reuploading so instead I will upload those separately.
Here have a look. All issue covers I could find and all covers from raws:

    6. Now what to say, what to say.
v3 is scanned and I'm afraid that it's about as bad as I warned.
No pressure if you decide to not release it after all.

Good news is that I got a fairly strong promise (not certain) that Outlanders v4 will be scanned by Random! Let's hope for the best.

    http://bayfiles.com/file/xrEr/8heZJr/Outlanders_Volume_3.rar

Not much to say, pretty consistent with past volumes, one of the doubles (063-064) looks a little (well, more than a little) obvious but other than that I think it's pretty decent all around.

Was gonna spit out a 3000px version too but my upload speed is too garbage, might do it when I have time after Christmas.

    1. Hardly late. The lack of quality in our scans of v7 still bothers me. And I can only imagine how much work the redrawing must have been.
That and the fact I have been calling v7 "filler volume" made me worried you might (rightfully) not bother releasing it.
But damn, your cleaned art is INCREDIBLE! Makes me wanna get bigger monitor just to see it better at full size. While maybe not volume for reading, it's now certainly volume for looking.

    1. That's a question for Hidokai, the scanlator.
He probably has "notify me" on in his comments, so if you reply to his latest one then msg likely goes through.

Anyway, I don't think the res is the problem but the bad spine. Spine really swallows artwork in double pages which turns editing to a nightmare. [And also our scans of the covers are bad. :( ]

      Delete
    2. Hmm. I notice that Hinokai hasn't responded yet. It might be because you replied to a comment from December instead of his latest one from March.
Or maybe he doesn't have "notify" on.

So let me answer for him. Debinded scans are the best type of scans and they would be >>extremely<< helpful for editing. There's absolutely no reason he wouldn't wish for those.
Unless, he has already started and progressed far with the editing.

And while I would be delighted to add your scans to my collection, they would probably end up unused if the release is already done.
So best, I guess, is to wait for few more days for a answer..
