DeleteLeveling could of course be better. But that is the editors eternity problem as leveling could always be done better. (Since leveling, while necessity, always destroys some details.)
But do I have any advices for it...
Well. Double-check that monitor brightness/contrast is to standard, choose leveling settings by gut, and don't look back.
Might seem trivial thing to say but that have saved me from lot of headache.

I think I read somewhere on your blog (like 2 blogs back, since they keep being removed..) that you scanned in 300dpi... but the specs on the site state 2400x4800 dpi (for B) and 4800x4800 (for A).
I have never seen dpi written like that... did they like, add the scanning-area into the equation? I guess that B is out of the question for scanning manga? You think A is up to the task?

Soften the spine of the book by hand. then do the scanning with the lid open and use your hands to keep page flat against scanner.

About dpi.

But I guess what you really wish to know, is what amount of dpi you should use.
I will start by saying that in all scanning I have done, I have never had a need to go over 1200dpi.
Example color image:

Look image at full size. At 1200dpi the subpixels are clearly visible. There's no reason to use higher dpi as it won't give any more information.
But, though 1200dpi would give best quality, we (Random Scans) scan books with 600dpi and 400dpi.
Because larger the dpi, the longer will it take for scanner machine to scan a page. So how large dpi can be used depends from scanspeed of scanner and how much effort you are willing to spend.

I am not going to save the manga volumes I scan (so I can cut/melt them to my hearts content :D). So I should be able to manage with the scanner only being A4 size.
I checked a few reviews and demonstrations and it seems even the LiDE 110 have up to 1200 dpi, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Will probably try use 600 dpi first and then compare to to 1200 and see if its worth the slower scanning.

DeleteYes, in that case cheaper scanner should work fine.
Okey, now I can give real advices.
So before sinking yourself for scanning...
-BUY a cheap spray bottle of eyeglass cleaning liquid. It's perfect for cleaning scanner glass. It easily removes fat and glue. (THERE will be glue. A lot.) And leaves glass instantly dry after being wiped.
-You need proper fabric for wiping. Microfiber would be best, but normal sturdy napkins work fine as well.
-Make sure that your image editing program and your computer will be able to handle your scanned images.
Image editing programs can demand large amount of RAM for handling large images.
As example in Photoshop CS5 1200dpi A4 in grayscale would take around 300Mb memory to just open. And editing image can raise needed RAM up to 2Gb. If you have 2Gb of RAM free, you should be fine no matter what. (If not, I can advice how to bypass those problems.)
-Turn off any weird "enchantments" on your scanner. Those do very little but can really slow your scanner.
Sad news about v35. I should have waited to be sure before saying anything. Will scan it of course but there will sadly be a significant quality problem with scans. In every page...

a) I noticed the holes (kinda hard to miss). You stated that the bad quality is partly because of the broken spine. Does that mean that someone tried to repair the book and caused the holes that way?
b) What do you mean with "page cut is outrageously bad", like the physical edges of the book? Like not a nice clean edges of paper? Or do you mean selected drawings in the book?(they cut some of the original drawings to fit in the volume)
c) About "Paper quality" would you say it have gotten lower in quality the last volumes? I always assumed dark horse stuck to the same paper quality for all the releases...
(Not really knowledgeable about things that could be bad with the scanning material as you can see. I cant see the quality of the paper, I guess you have to hold it to know it)
- My thoughts about the usability of the scans:
At first I was gonna say "good thing there is not that many spreads so I will have no problem with those holes". But then I checked the first half as well.... Man that is a lot of spreads.
Spreads (32 in total) with holes in artwork:
6,7,8,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,22,25,28,29,30,33,37,40,45,46,48,50,51,52,84,88,90,95,98,
Single pages (5 in total) with holes in artwork:
43,55,66,100,112
All the other pages and 3 spreads (103,104,107) were not hurt by the holes.
So my plan is to find the worst spreads and see if I can salvage em. No use doing the other pages before that.
I couldnt see any fault with the other pages when I glanced them over, so they should be fine.
I still think they are good scans, and If I cant handle the holes then ill just have to get myself a copy to melt :) (But ill give these scans a serious run first)

Holes aren't really a problem. They are small enough to use "SPOT HEALING BRUSH TOOL" in PS CS5.

As you can see it can't fix individual artwork, but is perfect for fixing textures and lines.
Real problem is page cut. Over centimeter from the bottom of the images is missing.
What I could do is scan ANOTHER copy of Berserk v35, with better page cut. But EVEN more damaged spine.
So. I guess the question is how redrawwy do you feel?
(SPOT HEALING BRUSH TOOL must be set to "content aware")

I'll see how much I can redraw, if it is to complicated (instead of just a pattern or lines) then I don't know what Ill be able to do though, I'm not that good at redrawing. (But I will try to use spot healing brust tool with content aware as you said on textures and lines).
Btw the dust that can be found on the pages (mostly near the middle(close to the spine, for instance page 9), is this the result of you scanning "borrowed" books? (Thinking if I should try to do scans of a newly bought and heated/unbound v35 to compare) Because dust removal was the number one time sinker when I did v33 and v34.
(Notice that book is now scanned again. I named it v35a)
DeleteI don't really know how the printing is done for books like manga. But I assume it's done by printing image to large sheet of paper and then a page is cut from it.
And I guess that if you do it as cheaply as possible, then the image and the cut page wont match.
So it seems they have printed the image way too big. So that no matter where the page is cut, it is always full of art.

Perhaps you meant the spine shadow? (The fact that spine itself will not be touching scanning glass. Unless you take book apart of course.)
In that case, have you tried using "DODGE TOOL" set to highlights? (Works best after leveling since it removes light tones but preserves strong dark tones.)

Maybe people wont care that some of it is there, but I kinda force myself to remove it (when it isn't to much) before a release and I tend to sink days into the removal.
I play around with dodge tool every now and then but most of the time I just use Ereaser tool, since dust is kinda only visible on white background.

The guy doesn't want to be credited, and since I only edited a few pages neither do I. You are however given due credit as the scanner in the last page of the volume.

- Not overcropped, actually could be cropped a little bit more to get clean edges.

I did promise you to release a png version and here it is. Weighing in at 1.38GB. My computer spent a couple of hours using PNGOUTWIN to shave away megabytes to reach that size. The JPEG version weighs in at 477MB (That is with ProJpeg plugin using settings 60x15 and optimizations on)
So what is new compared to the old version?
- Redrawed joined spreads
- 4275px height, 2968px width (for standard single pages).
- Individually leveled pages (no batch fixing curves/levels)
- Properly burned black areas
- Minor tweaks
This took quite a while to do, so it will probably take a long time before I give v34 and v35 the same treatment.
I guess this will be a 'v2'? (or 'v3'?)

It is a png version resized to 2400px (and optimized to save some mb). Reason for even uploading it:
- I hate the artifacts that jpeg creates.
- Some people (those that downloaded dr. anons releases) might prefer it.
- My reader of choice (CdisplayEx) couldnt display all the huge png files properly, it has no issues with this smaller archive.
Now I can promise, I wont upload another version of volume 33... I hate that I did not make up my mind on how to release it properly before uploading it.... oh well /rant

The release is marked as LQ, things I will do before I release this volume properly:
- Remove more dust (particularly on black areas)
- Completely redo the spread pages (Not happy with my crop on spreads) and try to join as many as I can.
Ofc when I release it again I will release it in full size PNGs.
Also: from now on all my png releases will be done using a 17 palette. I uploaded some sample pages using different palettes on comment 281 on the Berserk torrent if you want to see the difference it (hopefully won't) make visually.
Also #2: I will try to pull apart my volume 37 to scan soon. I am gonna try using the microwave and then pull the pages right out from the spine. Not sure how it will go but will be fun to try. Ofc if all goes well I will upload the scans to you.

Regarding downloading from BakaBT, if I remember correctly you shouldn't use the Beta of uTorrent, the latest stable uTorrent client should work (unless you are banned, but unless you have done something strange that shouldnt be the case).
DeleteRegarding HQ, it all depends on what you compare it to. High quality means different things to different people, however if a release have:
high resolution, good cleaning, good level adjustments (black and white, or colors), good rotate and cropping, then it should be considered high quality.
The uploaded unedited raws(if that is the proper term) have high resolution and therefore have the capacity of being high quality, however it takes editing to really make it great.
If we would compare edited scans from kickthekitty to evil genius scans then there are a few key differences:
- different translations
- different resolutions
- difference in the printed paperquality
and other things
While some prefer the translations from evil genius most would agree that the dark horse official translations are of a high quality. And the paper quality should be better in the volumes scans.

DeleteOne of the crappiest part of trying to describe something when real terminology for it doesn't exist, is having to come up with new terms by yourself. Because after using them for a while, you are stuck with them for good.
Terms like "quick release", "page cut" and "scan releases" will probably hunt me forever.
But "unedited scans" is something I use so often that I must clarify meaning behind it.
Those scans are actually edited as surprising as that might be. Standard editing would be lossless rotate and lossless crop.
Nevertheless the purpose behind those edits is to make scans better for storing and sharing.
They are unedited in a sense that there has been no editing to make them better for reading.
Kickthekitty: Thank you for the clarification, I assume you rotate it 90 degrees? (else I don't understand how it can be lossless).

ReplyDeleteJust wanted to inform you that I have disassembled volume 37.
ReplyDeleteI used a microwave and it went really smooth. I first tried to only microwave it for ~15 seconds but the pages felt like they stuck too much...
after microwaving it ~15-20 seconds more (during which the color spread page started lifting a bit, maybe just because it was the one at the top, or because it was folded...) the pages came of really easy.
It was just like in this video:

you just slightly pull and of it goes, since the glue have been melt.
After I pulled of half the pages I had to microwave it ~10 more seconds (and I had to repeat this three times) since they started to get stuck again.
The last two pages were really stuck and I tried microwaving it more and more... until one of the pages started to get a little burnishly brown... at which point I felt f'ck!! and just tried pulling harder to get the page off (since I couldn't microwave it anymore with it already turn brown) and it came of without a tear or anything :D
The brown part is really small and only on that one page. Also it was, luckily, in a easily redrawn part of the image :)
I noticed that it had started to smell after the last page (as I expected), not sure if it only started to smell because I burned a page or if it was earlier. (I kinda was a little excited since I have not done it before (I'm such a child :D).
Not sure how much damage my brain have taken because of the fumes, but then again I do not plan on doing this again until v38 is out. (and if I decide to scan more series I will find a way to make sure I do not get exposed, like doing it outdoors or something).

There was actually 2-3 pages of advertisement left on the spine, but in my regard they are useless, so I left them on.
Most of the pages didn't have any noticeable glue left on them but all of them started to curl a little (very slight, probably nothing permanent).
Right now I have divided the pages into 4 stacks and but some books and weights on them (with a white page between) and will let them sit there for a day or two, to make sure they are straight.
I have not scanned them yet, and I will probably not do that for a while. But hopefully within a months time.
Figured I should give you an update though.
